The Biblioteca Luigi Chiarini ("Luigi Chiarini"
Library) is the largest institution in Italy specializing in the
field of cinematography.
Established in 1935 under the umbrella of the Centro
Sperimentale di Cinematografia (Experimental Cinematography
Centre), the Library currently contains over 90,000 items of
reference material. Thanks to its acquisition of numerous
collections of books and documents, the library is evolving from
its status as a place of conservation into a real centre of
research and historical record.
The first venture into publishing came about in 1937
with the launch of the famous magazine "Bianco e Nero"
(Black and White). This was followed by the publication of "Storia
del Cinema Italiano" (History of Italian Cinema), and subsequently
many other series were added to the publishing catalogue.
